Health and change doesn’t just stop at us! What about our Fur-Babies? When I bake these, Trident comes a running, he cant wait for them to come out of the oven. Natural and healthy for your fur-baby and full of probiotic! What’s not to love?
Let's face it - you don't really know what's in those dog treats you buy from the store, do you? That’s what inspired me to spread ever more love, you know exactly what it is you're treating your dog with - and at only ~25 of the healthiest calories per treat, you know you're not putting their health at risk!
So I started researching - what exactly could I mix together to make a really special treat. For me, It had to be quality.
They had to be healthy…
I didn't want to feel guilty when I gave him one (or five) so I wanted to make sure that only nice healthy ingredients would make it into this recipe.
They had to be able to last…
I wanted to make sure they would keep at room temperature for at least a week or two. This led me to cut out anything like meat, eggs or cheese.
They had to get him excited…
After all, they are *treats* so they needed to be something special.
Peanut Butter to the Rescue!
So since I couldn't just put something like bacon in the recipe, who doesn’t love peanut butter? I remembered he loves licking the spoon of peanut butter, it was his reward.
Balancing out the ingredients
OK so now I had the main characters - unfermented sourdough slurry and the peanut butter. Now it was just about finding that healthy combination to round out the recipe. So after trial and error, I settled on:
* Rolled oats - a nice healthy base. Fiber for healthy digestion, supports health and their coat.
* Cinnamon - this one was a given after reading online that it has some great health benefits for dogs - and Anti inflammatory properties that help with arthritis. Antioxidant that helps fight infections. When it comes to fighting off potential harm, cinnamon has dogs covered! Cinnamon inhibits growth of bacteria like Listeria and Salmonella and can help fight viral infections. It also has antifungal properties and can be beneficial to dogs who suffer from chronic yeast infections
* Coconut Oil - adds a bit of tasty fats into the recipe. Improves coat and skin, aids digestion and boosts immune function.
* Honey - just a touch to add a nice bit of healthy sweetness. Help with allergies and assist in their coat.
* Peanut butter- Zylitol free, for dogs peanut butter is packed with protein for muscle health, healthy fats for a shiny coat and essential vitamins like B6 and E.
Something was still missing
Once I got to this point I knew I was on to something! Something was still missing. Think about the treats you get at the pet stores, the best ones always have something drawing your eye. Whether that's on the packaging, or in the shape of the treats themselves - there's always that little something that makes them special and unique. I realized I already have my special mark It’s infused with LOVE! ♥️🐾
Yes, I know King Trident and all other fur-babies don’t care about the shape, but for me - it's what makes these treats extra special, they come in the shape of a heart.
